SERBIAN RAILWAYS
General Terms
Advance purchase of tickets and ticket validity period
Tickets can be purchased in advance not earlier than 1 month before the beginning of a journey and are valid as follows:

For a single journey (outward or return journey):

  • 1 day for distances up to 100 km
  • 2 days for distances between 101 km and 400 km
  • 4 days for distances of 401 km and longer, for outward and return journeys (return tickets)
  • 1 day for distances up to 100 km
  • 1 month for distances of 101 km and longer

If a return ticket for distances up to 100 km has been bought to be used during Sunday and national holidays, it is valid from Friday (the day before the holiday) at 00.01h till Monday (the day after the holiday) at 24.00h.

For return tickets with 1 month validity period, outward or return journeys must end within the appropriate period which applies for a single journey: (2 or 4 days, depending on distance), starting from the date indicated on the ticket (for outward journey), i.e. from the date indicated on the ticket after validation made by a travelling ticket inspector (for return journey).

Ticket validity period begins at 00.01h on the first day of ticket validity period indicated on the ticket. The journey must end on the train which, according to the timetable, arrives in an intermediate station on the last day of ticket validity period at 24.00h at the latest.

Discontinuation of travel

Single journey ticket allows one break of journey, whereas return ticket allows one break of journey during outward journey and one break of journey during return journey. In both cases it is obligatory, however, to have the ticket validated at the station where the break of journey is made (which is done by the station master or an employee in charge and immediately after alighting from a train).

If the break of journey has not been validated, the ticket will not be valid for continuation of journey, and return tickets will not be valid only for continuation of outward journey. Break of journey will not extend ticket validity period!

Luggagge service

A passenger has the right to have free hand luggage service, which includes objects that can be easily taken into coaches and put above and under the seat occupied by the passenger in the coach, unless it contravenes customs regulations or if any damage can be done to coaches by these objects.

The objects intended for passengers' use, packed in trunks, baskets, bags, boxes and similar receptacles, will be accepted as luggage for carriage.

Passengers' luggage is accepted for carriage only at the station, with a valid ticket, and not later than 15 minutes before the departure of the relevant train.

According to regulations, live stock must not be taken into coaches and dining cars. It is allowed, however, unless contrary to veterinary, sanitary and other regulations, to take the following into the coaches:

  • small domesticated animals locked up in cages, baskets and other convenient receptacles, provided that they can be placed as hand luggage;
  • small dogs (which measured from the ground to the highest part of their back are not higher than 30 cm), provided that they do not bother other passengers and can be placed into one's lap.

The dogs carried by rail, irrespective to their size, must be muzzled, whereas bigger dogs must be leashed, as well.

It is not allowed to take dogs into and have them carried in multiple-unit sets without individual compartments.

A half of the regular II class fare for passenger train must be paid for each dog (except the small ones) carried in coaches. In addition, the passenger must have a whole cabin in the sleeping car for exclusive – personal use.
