Civil engineering occupies with current and investment planning, organization, maintaining of tracks, track plants and objects, as well as controlling and keeping. In the Civil Engineering Section there are Section Headquarters and 14 track maintenance sections, situated in:

Belgrade, Paraćin, Niš, Kosovo Polje, Kraljevo, Valjevo, Užice, Požarevac, Zaječar, Novi Sad, Sremska Mitrovica, Subotica and Zrenjanin,

as well as the section for the mechanical maintenance, which occupies with current and partly investment track maintenance, in mechanical way.

The maintenance of all the buildings on the Serbian Railways network is being done by the Buildings Maintenance Section (RJ).

Main executive units for the maintenance, control and keeping of tracks, objects, machines, terrain and mechanization are districts.

There are three kinds of districts:

• Permanent-way districts
• Artificial works districts
• Specialized districts

The total engineering line mileage on the territory of "Serbian Railways" is: 3.808.736km, from which:

• 3.533,191 km of single track lines and
• 275,545 km of double track lines

and totally that is: 4.084,281 km of open track

from which 1.196,051 km of open track is electrificated, and the main running lines are:

• 925,025 km of single track lines and
• 271,026 km of double track lines.

The length of other station tracks is 1.452,0 km, which is totally 5.536,281 km of track, which are being used for the railway transport.
